padded cherry bench

I have an old padded cherry wood bench that the wife wants me to put bake together. She does not want to change the old antique look. So I need to know what I can use to wipe down the wood to clean it up. I am going to just put a new coat of finish over the top and leave it as is.

I usually start with mineral spirits to clean old grunge. Test in an inconspicuous area. After that, wax on!
