I got a Christmas gift from one of the other guys where I work today. He had a large Mesquite tree cut down a few years ago and had it ripped into slabs and kiln dried. The piece he gave me is 2" thick x 18" wide x 70" long. Excuse the photo color, the florescent lights murdered the color on my phone camera. Spin some Platters? but I am also tempted by the "dark side", some flat work.

Hard to go wrong with whichever direction you take, Deane. Me? I might just put some poly on it and hang it over the sofa just like that!

A platter and a coffee table? Have fun!

I like Thom's idea  I was thinking maybe a wall platter if you can find a BIG lathe to barrow.

Deane, a lady down the road got a piece about that size which had a void in the center. She made a headboard and filled the void with turquoise. Stunning!
I would probably do flatwork.

That sure looks like a nice large flat work project. It would be a shame to cut it into platters when there are often some shorter sections available compared to finding a large piece, about 18 board feet $$$$.

I see a coffee table or several platters.

Man - that is one nice chunk of wood! Strange, but I have to agree with the coffee table idea. Not often you can find wood this size that is kiln dried!
