I purchased a Delta Bench Top Mortiser and after getting it setup I have to remove/clean off the coating of ??? gook that was used as a protective coating during shipping.

Let me know your thoughts on the best way to do this.

Mineral spirits and steel wool should do the job easily.

You know, I find WD-40 is great for lots of thes jobs. And a bit more friendly on the skin. Greg

+2 for kerosene. It cleans up Cosmoline really well.

+3 on WD-40, plus it smells better than mineral spirits or kerosene.

Kerosene is the traditional cleaner/solvent to remove the cosmoline (grease). It will quickly dissolve the cosmoline and will leave a slightly oily residue that protects the metal.

You can also use mineral spirits. Some use WD-40 but it is no better than the kerosene or mineral spirits and costs quite a bit more.

I cleaned up 2 new machines today. First, I used paint thinner, didn't work bad, but got into the cutting head on the planer, and got out a can of PB blaster. Now that stuff really worked on the spiral cutterhead. Just sprayed it down and then took the air hose to it. Kindof messy, but clean cutterhead.
