Bought a metal box this past summer248277248278and a saw was inside. 6-1/2', diamond knockout blade. Cord was a bit meesed up, and was wrapped in a white (??) plastic tape. Tried it out.....NOTHING happen, not a sound. Got to checking things out, found the cord itself was at fault. Let's see: White wire to white wire? Check. Black wire from plug to green wire from saw? No-Go! Black wire from to .....to... nothing? Hmmm, three wire cord, goin to a two prong plug. Simple to fix..248280 Plugged the cord in again.... saw ran like new! Imagine that! Trying to date this little saw..248281248282Seems to be worth......$5 ???:D

This type of thing is why I'm attempting to avoid yard sales-- I have no ability to walk away.

Steve
I remember the box quite well, sat in my father pickup under my feet as we drove to the job site, that was back in the late 1950's. He used it only as a trim saw. Skill 77 for every thing else. Other then the Comet 16" RAS. Tom

Time to get out the buffer, Steve.

Nah. It's purty, as is. You don't get good looks like that just laying around.
This saw was used well by someone that cared for it.

That metal box, though, it do need a little bit of work. How would one go about restoring the outside? Sand it all down (after a copy of the logo was made) and spray on a matching colour? Maybe a Rustoleum flavour? Armour Yellow for the logo? I still would like a box for the other all metal saw i have, though.248319248320 Just to keep it out of the dust, anyway. This one was a "freebie" an ex-tennant left behind when they moved out. New blade is mine. Runs like new. ( wonder if Sears still will replace it, if it breaks?)

Nice solidly built circular saw but neither of the others show in this thread match the beauty I sold for a woodworker's widow a few years back who obviously took loving care of his Porter-Cable Model A-6 Guild saw. I sold it for $50 for her.

This may Help I found this advertisement (http://books.google.com/books?id=ytwDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA286&lpg=PA286&dq=skil+saw+model+520&source=bl&ots=8HCaSCgsT2&sig=alaW2vSGMNCYghPcZ6PEnAdEgyQ&hl=en&sa=X&ei=NC3SUKuIM-m_0AGzg4HgCw&ved=0CC8Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=skil%20saw%20model%20520&f=false)from an April 1952 Popular Mechanics magazine when I did a search on Skill Saw Model 520.

Looks like from the ad, I need to find 6" saw blades, not 6-1/2'' ones. With a diamond knockout, no less. The Larger Craftsman takes a "normal" 7-1/4" blade, with a round hole. Maybe a buffer might work on those two? Dad had an even older Skil saw, looked like it could hold an 8" blade. Weighs as much as the other two put together. IF I get down to Mom's house over the Holidays, I might get a picture of that old warhorse. IF I can lift the dang thing...

Thanks Lee,

Just spent a half hour looking through that PM magazine. 313 pages, with an article on RAS use, lots of ads for tools, from South Bend lathes to several gadgets that turn your electric drill into all kinds of things. Loved the one on the pre-Rockwell upside down scroll saw....six tools in one.

I just checked my bostwick braun Catalog #43, all they had was Black & Decker stuff. All metal. This catalog had UPS rates for 19......44! 1400+ pages of wholesale stuff to the local hardware stores. shipping out of Toledo, Ohio. And no, The lowest "number' on Stanley planes was a #2. Don't ask what a fully equiped #45 sold for.....

That Popular Mechanics is fun to look thru. Some of that stuff costs about the same today as it did 60 years ago!
