Using some curly walnut :D as a top on a keepsake box. Should you use the curly waves horizontally or the grain? The top is 7" wide by 6" deep.

I generally run the grain in the long dimension direction for stability. The curl will look good either way.

I agree with Lee, I run the grain on the long dimension for the same reason.

Thank you for the replies. I was going to go the other direction but agree about the stability. Pics of all the boxes I am making for Christmas presents will be posted when completed.

It is made of walnut, bloodwood, cherry and holly.

JUst our of curiosity, how is the lid made? Is there a substrate behind the pieces?

Looks like thicker wood for the inlay. Aren't you worried about wood expansion next summer blowing the miters apart? How thick is the inlay?

Inlay is 1/4". There is a little "wiggle room". The roundovers allow you to hide it.
