I'm sure I've seen an ad or two in the past for lumber that's had the heat treatment process done to it. That's the process that darkens the wood among other things.

But I can't seem to find that ad or any others. Is that something that's still available? If so, does anyone know of a source for it? Or is there a process to make one's own?

You're looking for "thermal modification"
The info here should get you started. http://www.seasonwood.com/company/jartek-thermowood-kiln-tours
I have no personal experience, this is just some info I found while browsing.

Tony - pretty cool but Vancouver is a little distant for me. I'm in SE Wisconsin.

I'm hoping that if there isn't a local supplier that some material can at least be mail ordered.

Rick - CL?

Yea, Canada is a stretch for me too. Actually, if you read through the web site a little it explains the process of how this is done. Albeit a somewhat costly process, they probably can recommend dealers and/or distributors of the finished product.

Matthew Burak (http://www.tablelegs.com/) has been offering thermally-modified lumber in its print catalog, although I've never seen it on their web site. Give 'em a call.

John,

Google Westwood heat treated wood. That will give you a start on your search.

This shows a few suppliers within a reasonable distance. I have no idea how reliable these results are.

Over here in Seattle, Crosscut hardwoods sells it in poplar and oak. Full boards. I think I have seen it at rockler as well.
