Rough Face Finish

I am preparing to start a project for my son. It will be a keepsake box and I am considering a rough face for the top. In other words I will plane the underside of the top smooth and leave the top side rough. I will probably use Danish oil for the finish but am stumped on what to use on the rough face. Any pointers?

Are you wanting an oil finish, wax finish or film finish? Transparent or opaque? Amber or clear? Low maint or high maintenance?
