This is from some more green mesquite. I turned the outside last night, got too late to do the hollowing so I wrapped in in stretch wrap to hold it until tonight. Hollowed it out tonight and since this piece wasn't quite so soaking wet, I was able to sand and finish it right away.
This chunk had a little bit of curl to it too, tried to get it to show in the pics.
I think it's about time to turn something other than mesquite.

4" x 4" finished with antique oil

Beautiful little vase, Kathy. Why give up on Mesquite? You probably have an endless supply and it looks great finished.

Do you do anything to fill the pores before finishing? I've tried a few different things but was wondering how you finish your Mesquite.

Thanks Doug!
I don't do anything to fill the pores, just sand it up and apply the finish (usually DO or antique oil).
Nothing wrong with turning mesquite, I've just got some other woods that have been waiting their turn .

Exceptional piece---which is better, the wood, shape, or finish. How long have you been turning--wow.

Kathy, I always enjoy seeing what you come up with, and this is no exception. The mesquite - love it. The form - love it.

I wish we had mesquite around here. If you ever have an interest in a wood swap, let me know. I have: walnut, cherry, ambrosia maple...

Beautiful feminine form with that undulating grain and the stark difference between heart and sapwood, a very nice piece Kathy

Thanks everyone!
Mesquite really works well with this type of form, there's usually enough sapwood to get a nice saddle and you can always count on a nice contrast between heart and sapwood. I lucked out on this piece with getting a little curl, and to think this was from the scrap left when I cut a bowl blank from a half log ;).

It's an elegant form Kathy! I'm sure you've got your fill of mesquite but I never get tired of seeing what you make out of it.

+1 on what Rick said. I too enjoy seeing the mesquite pieces, especially the bowls.

Fine form. The subtile curl and flowing sapwood "cap" really set this one apart.
