When I started to rough out this blank I found a band of material that was really spongy and
rotten. I threw the block in the trash, but later thought I would give the diluted white glue
soak a try. I just applied the glue to the punky parts with a rag and kept pouring it on until it
seemed saturated. It cured for a day and the next day it turned pretty good, I wet sanded it
so the slurry could fill the many large holes in the punky section. It took several sanding
sessions but it finally smoothed out. Turned out to be wife’s new best liked piece. I confess I
was surprised at how well it turned out. Bay Laurel, 4 3/4” wide , 3 3/4” high and 1/4”
thick. Thanks for looking.

That turned out great Don. What is the diluted white glue soak? Are you talking about something like elmer's and what is the dilution ratio?

You got it Ernie. I used about half white glue and half water. I have another in the pipeline that wasn't quite as punky, but I am still using the glue.

Gorgeous bowl sir. So..the glue doesn't impair the finish? Sounds like a great idea and looks great!

Don,

The bowl looks great!

I bet you never thought that posting this would keep me turning did you?

I have a reaction to CA... I almost stop breathing... I guess that is a reaction.

I now have something (glue watered down) that I can use to fix up the punky places in wood so I can keep turning.

Thanks so much.

Gorilla glue or epoxy will be tried for pens next.

Take care and keep posting those wonderful items.

Great save Don. What a shame if that had ended up in flames - beautiful bowl. -Steve

Well, Ed, I sure never expected a result like that, but I am very happy it turned out that way. Keep em spinning and don't forget to post the pics.
