A plane that was starting to get rust spots like a case of the measles. Front knob had a crack in it, as well. Turned a new knob, time to clean and tune the rest.247479247480247481247482 Seems to need a little TLC right now. This is a #3 size plane.

Is the blade a Union blade?

It seems to have a bit of a taper.

In my limited experience with Union planes the thicker blade was one of my favorite features.

It does have a bit of a taper. From maybe a fat 1/16" at the top, to a very fat 1/8" at the edge. Not a stamp on it anywhere, though.

Someone in the past had ground a 20 degree angle to the edge of the iron. Leave it alone? Regrind to 25 degrees?

If you like to work with a final angle of 25 or 30 degrees, put a microbevel on it starting at that. It should hold together fine with a 20 degree primary and a secondary bevel of whatever is needed.

Ok, re-set the Honing jig to 25 Degrees, and set up the beltsander to run the jig on. I also polished the back side of the iron. I actually tried out a PARPLUS iron first in this set up, just to get things set up right. Parplus iron now takes paper thin shavings the width of the iron ( Lost any camber it had, will add some later) and then tried the Union iron. Found the Union iron was just a bit out of square. Edge now has a 25 Degree bevel added to the 20 degrre main bevel. Back has been polished up as well. Looked through the group of planes I have sitting around, awaiting some work done on them......Hmmm might keep me busy for awhile...

Yeah, not too much on the belt sander though. You only need to make a small bevel to get good edge strength, and it will be easy to refresh until it gets large. Someone has essentially thrown you a softball by putting that long primary on there, I've seen the same setup on several old laminated irons, with a steeper secondary bevel.
