Not much turning going on in my shop lately. I have a very detailed piece that I have been working on that has been consuming all my spare time and I will post it soon But in between that complex piece I decided to try turning a traditional type vase (amongst a few other pieces). This vase was turned to finial shape over several sessions. I wanted it to be somewhat functional for a dried flower arrangement or something so instead of going real thin, this one is just shy of 1/4" thick and I stopped the hollowing 3" from the bottom for ballast. Got to finally test out the real capibilities of my Carter Hollow Roller and it worked pretty good. This is the tallest single piece form I have done to date.

10 3/4" tall x 5 3/5" wide. Finished with thinned shellac for sanding sealer, three coats of tung oil finish, beal buffed and Ren wax.

Comments, critiques and complaints are welcome....like always!

Very nice Scott. That classic form is hard to do and get the proportions right and I think you nailed it.

This is flat out gorgeous, Scott.......you absolutely nailed the form! Smooth flowing curves, correct proportions and a sweet curve all the way to a minimally tucked foot..........your shoulder to neck ratio is spot on.......man this is top shelf, all the way!

That looks like it should be able to make some dried flowers VERY happy!

I really like this, Scott. The form is good, the wood is good, and the finish is good. I think we have a winner!

Saw this on WTA this morning but liked it so well that I had to comment again. To me, the form is just perfect and something that I am always striving for and rarely achieving. The wood is nice enough but with perfect form, even the blandest wood looks great. Conversely, even the most gorgeous burl cannot save a form that is off. Very well done, Scott.

Great classic form and a really fine piece of salted sycamore. Next to maple, nothing splats as beautifully as sycamore. Meanwhile, nice tease on the yet to be completed piece. Get working, we're anxious now.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. It was sure different hollowing through a large opening! I had to resist the urge to carve or burn or Pierce this piece! When it was done I figured that it was a good idea to leave it natural.
