Need some help identifying species. I know it came from Georgia in the form of 6x6 timbers that where used in transporting some heavy machines. Some parts look oak like.
Thanks

Thomas, I work with oak every single day, and that does not look like any oak that I've seen before. I'm not sure what it is though.

One clue might be the origin of the machines... whether overseas or US origin they would have used wood from that area.

In the first pic, the bottom piece looks like it may be birch and the one above it with the holes looks like maple.
Some of the other pictures appear to be hickory.

Just my 2 cents.

I was thinking hickory, is it hard on your tools?

I think the pic with the holes is maple but I also think it is his bench and those are the dog holes.

The maple is my bench. As for being hard on the tools, yes, this stuff is dense, but the one piece I hand plained went surprisingly well, had to slow down at the table saw. The far right pic is rough sawn boards and the two other pics are the same plained board,

You might be able to find a copy of Hoadley's excellent "Identifying Wood" either at a local woodworking store or your public library.
