Yes I'm turning again, it took longer than anticipated to get to this point, more than a year

Anyway here's a bowl that I rough turned 4 years ago, it was warped some but still did have enough thickness to make it with handles on it.

It is Curly Silver Maple about 9.5" X 4"

Any and all comments are welcome as always :)

Welcome again Leo..........we've needed someone who can identify wood here a number of times lately........ you always seemed to have that covered pretty well..........nice bowl....the handles are a nice addition! Like the color as well.

Glad you are back Leo. That is a neat trick to leave the extra as a handle. I guess it would also work to just leave a "ring" and save some carving, or did you have another technique for leaving just the handle? You again have our interest in your experience and work.

Thanks ALL for the warm welcome again :D, and yes I'm fine and glad to be able to have the time and a nice place to turn again.

As to how I do the handles, well got the same ?? at the Canadian woodworking forum and I made a couple of pictures showing the basics of how I get there.

I use the distortion of the wood as the beginning of the handles, the bowl I used to show how to was from a crotch and had some unequal distortion as well, but still could be used for my intentioned how to showing.

#1 shows the bowl inside turned and the handle size marked and colored (for this how to showing)

#2 and 3 show the difference in the thickness that's left after turning the bowl's interior, still enough left over for a handle.

#4 shows the size of the handle after rough turning the bowl wall to finish thickness.

#5 shows the pieces that got sawn off and #6 shows the underside of what's left to remove to finish the bowl.

Hope this makes it clear as how I do it :)
