This is from the smaller piece of the apple log. I turned it last night and got finished too late to bother with pics.
It's about 4" x 4" finished with antique oil. I still need to do a little more work on the finish.

Great form, Kathy, as usual........

I really like the 3rd pic, wish it had a bit more light, but the orientation and angle is nice to my eye. What sort of setup are you using for pics?

I like the way the natural colors play against each other! Gives the form the look of old pottery! Nice work!

Neat hollow forms, Kathy. Apple wood looks like it makes dramatic turnings.

Kathy,
The bead at the opening sets it off very nicely. I always have problems with how to terminate a larger opening and the bead fixes that. Good job.

Really like this a lot. The form is nice, and the contrast between the sap wood and the heart wood creates a subterranean look, like catching a glimpse inside some mysterious cave.

I'm using a photo tent and a single 100w daylight CF. Since this piece is small, it's sitting on top of a box to get more of a profile view. I should have moved the light higher, without the box the light comes a little more from above.

I really like the form. Nice wood. I hear apple is difficult to keep from cracking.... any advice?

Thanks Rich, I hear the same thing. Both of the piece I turned were endgrain so the pith runs through the bottom, but not centered. On the taller piece, it's right along the rim and there has been a little cracking from the pith. The pith on this piece is closer to the center and I applied more CA to try and stabilize the pith. I've also been keeping it in a plastic bag to really slow down the drying. I open the bag each day, let some moist air out and some dry in. So far, so good, no signs of cracking yet, but drying will take quite a while with this method, so we'll see.
