Bob-thanks for the compliment but the photo in my avatar is not a "cross" but the intersection of two top rails for a deck I did awhile ago. The wood used is Alaska yellow cedar.

Thanks Chris. I thought the front side of the cross looked a little long but figured it must have been the camera angle. I really do like how that intersection comes together though. How is that done?

The angle of the joint is actually oblique, which makes it slightly more difficult to do but it was done completely with hand tools. A combo-square, knife, saw, hammer, chisels and a hand plane were the tools used. The joint is compression fitted and has a tenon that comes up through a post below.

Chris, It would make a great joint for a cross....a friend just requested I make one. Can you share how it is done or point us to a source?

The boards are approximately 2 1/4" thick by 5" wide.
