I feel somewhat foolish posting this considering the wonderful ornaments I have seen posted on this forum, but these are my first 2. Turned from a piece of spalted maple from my backyard, with cherry finials, C&C are welcome. I am not to happy with the shape of the globe on the shorter of the 2 but it was the very first one I have ever attemped. And sorry for the bad photos I dont know much about photography.

Timothy, you're off to a great start and they will only get better and better.

Looks pretty good to me! Did you hollow the globes?

Thank you. Steve yes I did hollow these. I saw a youtube vid put out by Carl Jacobson, so following his lead I hollowed with my "1/4 gouge, I was surprised at how easy it was to hollow them this way.

Great job. One suggestion might be to use a contrasting wood for the finial. You can even color a finial black with shoe dye, India ink or even a felt tip pen.

Nothing workng with those. My first ornament looks like a flat squash with a finger sticking off it (and I didn't hollow it either so it couldn't even be hung because of the weight!). Your off to a great start.

Those look great. I would agree with Mike that more of a color contrast between the globe and finial would be good, but that is just a personal preference. Great job!
