during 2010, I did an attempt with an "illusion" piece.
http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?155841-last-piece&highlight=
on the impetus, I did start a second, but...lack of idea to make a different piece, it was pending.
So, now there is:
Cherry, 5" dia X 6 3/4" H, danish oil.
I wish you goog turnings,
Friendly Lionel.

Lionel,

Am I correct in thinking the outside form is cut on the lathe (and possibly the portion between the legs and up to the bottom of the "bowl"), but the remaining portion is cut away by hand and/or power tool?

I really love the piece, but man is that a lot of work after it comes off of the lathe.

Lionel,
Like Dan said, that is absolutely amazing. I can't believe all of the hand work that went into to it.

Thanks for sharing,
Steve

Dan, Steve,
Thanks for the kindly words

You're right Dan, The outside, the hollowing of HF, the space between the legs are done on the lathe
The remaining is cut by hand and with the help of a router clamped on the bed
and...a boring sanding :D

I think the extra planing involved is what really amazes me about the process... you have to visualize what the final piece will look like and make sure stage I doesn't go too far, else stage II is directly affected. I would be really slow doing that...

A really amazing piece. Nice crisp edges, very graceful form. Nicely done Lionel.

Lionel, this is a very nice piece. The curvature of the legs really add movement to the piece and give the illusion of a "creature".

Too cool. It makes me think of several things…

A bowl taking a stroll (The light side)
Something coming out at me of the night (The scarry side)
An "Imperial walker" out of Star Wars (The dark side)

I can only imagine what creating something like that must feel like. Simply amazing to me. Thanks for sharing it!

Great work Lionel. I cant begin to see such things when I look at a chunk of wood. That may be a good thing since I wouldn't have the patience or skill to create something like this even if I could imagine it.
