Part of The Taino Collection. Bowls with a rustic pyrographic frieze. I thought I would create a Caribbean themed collection of turned items with Taino symbols burned into the wood.

Wood: Saman
Height: 3.5"
Diameter: 7"
Finish: Walnut Oil and Carnauba Wax

Looks great but we need more pictures! What type of wood is Saman?

I like the bowl Carl! Nice form - never heard of the wood before but sure like the soft look. Interesting symbols. Are they random or do they tell a story?

Nice shape and burning. Never seen Saman that light in color as most I have see was dark. But then I have not seen a whole lot of it either.

A beautiful bowl and a very creative concept. Haven't heard the name "Taino" since the 8th grade and I seem to remember that it was around October 12th.

Saman is a local hardwood which I believe is also called the Rain Tree. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albizia_saman

As I live over in the DR and I wanted something that combines the old and new I thought that it would be a popular series that expats and tourists alike would be attracted to here. The symbols are random but each one has a meaning and seem to relate to a specific object such as frog, snail, snake, sun etc.

The Taino Indians were one of the two indigenous tribes in the Caribbean with the Carib Indians being the other. More information on the Taino can be seen here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ta%C3%ADno_people.

I have some other blanks that I am going to use to create more of this series which I am enjoying immensely. :)

Very nice piece. I like both the form and the pyro work. Makes me think of petroglyphs I've come across on some rock faces while hiking the trails in Mesa Verde.
