Just joined this forum and I am really impressed by the information available here. Now for some probably stupid questions. I aquired an Epilog 100
watt laser a few months ago and have been learning the basics. I have
access to a lot of cultured marble that seems to laser well but was wondering
if the grit is harmful to the machine. Anyone had experience with this stuff.
Also, what is used to mask wood from the smoke residue. I tried masking tape
which worked well but was a pita to remove. Thanks and please excuse my inexperience!

You should be using an exhaust system and air assist. They both will help keep the lense and mirrors clean. I have not heard of any damage caused by etching marble granite or glass.

Did you use the blue painter's tape? It is made to remove much more easily than regular masking tape. Unfortunately the price reflects its superior behavior.

Patrick,

In addition to Jerry's comments concerning air assist and exhaust most engravers apply a finish to wood products before engraving to prevent smoke damage. Generally you would apply a coat of laquer, poly or whatever finish you planned to use for the job. You can also use paste wax as a quick means of applying a simple finish, the best chioce depends on the project but the smoke can usually be wiped off with a damp cloth.

Of course using a mask is also an option.
