Each year the William Bonifas Fine Arts Center (http://www.bonifasarts.org/calendar.cfm?eventtype=exhibit&list=0&bpx), Escanaba, Michigan, holds a juried art competition that is open to all Upper Peninsula artists. I have been lucky enough to have been accepted 4 years in a row and this year, Marc Himes decided to apply and was accepted as well.
This was Marc’s first show and he had two of his turnings accepted! (Birch platter (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?189210-Dyed-and-textured-Birch-crotch-platter&highlight=), Celestial Collision (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?190969-Celestial-Collision-Wall-hanging&highlight=)) I honestly figured he had a great shot at winning an award because not only are his turnings beautiful to look at… they hang on the wall as well! That has to be the best of both worlds when it comes to these art competitions because usually it is the paintings or photographs that are the only recognized winners.
As is typical of the Bonifas awards ceremony, it was crowded!

I honestly believe that no one was more surprised than Marc when his name was called out for an award! Congrats Marc! Nothing better than getting an award – especially nice when it is the first time you ever entered a competition! Here is Marc accepting the award and also a photo of Marc and his wife, Rene, standing in front of the winning entry!

Oh, and just to prove that I was there, here I am with my entry, a purple dyed Black Ash hollow form (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?187240-Amethyst-Flavored-Ash-HF&highlight=).

Just wanted to share because every time a fellow turner gets recognition for their art – we all win!
