Some of you guys use a metalworking lathe or an adapted 3 or 4 jaw chuck, so this is aimed at those who are careful about the machined ways. Works with either threaded or bolt- ons.

This one supports a 3 and 4" model.

Jim,
as Hank explained in his first line, it's to protect the machined ways on a metal lathe. Dinging them up with a chuck tends to affect accuracy.

It actually does two things: first it aligns the lathe chuck’s back end to mate with the spindle, either through bolts or spin on. Second, it protects the ways in case the worst thing happens- a dropped chuck.

Hank , many thanks for this idea, I use 2 chucks on my metal lathe a small 3 jaws and a 4 jaws and I use either the carriage or the tailstock while I unbolt the chucks or while I am bolting it to the plate, this wood support could save time

Ahh - that explains it - I have no frame of reference as to metal lathe needs, etc.

Thanks
