Well, I'd begun to despair that none of my 8 children had any interest in anything woodwoodworking--'dad can you help me with a ______' has pretty much always meant 'dad, will you make this for me'. So I was really pleased when my youngest son (14) turned to me in a somewhat boring class we were in yesterday and said, 'Dad, do you have 10 bucks--I'd really rather go home and make a pen with you'. So we did--stopped at the woodworking store, he picked pen and a blank, and we went home and started. Finished today--pen's not perfect, but it was his first and he made it. The grin says it all (mine's not any smaller)--maybe there'll be someone to pass the tools down to after all!

You can force any kid into a subject... but only the ones who chose to go there will stay. Maybe next time he'll ask for something bigger :)

Fantastic that you found a young apprentice. Those times will never be forgotten...by either of you.

The pen looks great but really, I gotta know when do you have time to turn wood with 8 kids????? It would seem to me your either in bed making them or your doing something with one you already made.:D On a serious note it probably feels real good to have someone to spend shop time with.

Thanks all.

Scott-hang in there, I'd about given up hope.
Darren, it's been a crowd over the years, but I'm down to 4 in the house. But I really do like doing things with any of them--its just that most of them don't like doing anything that's not attached to the internet.
