Bought this last year for fifty bucks and finally getting around to setting it up. It's a "Cal Hawk" made in 1992. Seems pretty typical of the breed.
I haven't found any major problems except that the motor (labeled 1 hp and 7/14 amps) starts very sluggishly. I've been through the switch and wiring--it has a 12 ga. cord, not original--and swapped our capacitors without much improvement. There seems to be no overload protection, but that's another issue.
I know cheap Taiwanese motors have a poor reputation, but I haven't run into this before. Any suggestions? The symptoms seem to me to be those of a weak capacitor or starting switch not making properly.
This motor looks like a TEFC, but I suspect it's not really--like some Taiwanese saw motors. That is, the switch is not really sealed inside but rather is exposed under the fan.
Thanks for any suggestions.
