So far I am inclining towards using buttons (slot and clip). But this is on a cabinet with some storage, and knowing my wife, I know this will be moved every other week to create a new look in our living area. I am not sure how strong the buttons will be if the cabinet is lifted by the top (I know it's a bad habbit but I in the long run inevitable).

Here's a document I read on this topic.

If you use the slot and clip method you saw in your link, just put several of them, along each side. If you have enough, they should support the weight of the base when the table is picked up. As long as the table top can slide a bit you won't have seasonal expansion contraction problems. If the base is light, use just a few clips, if it is heavy use more. You can easily make your own clips from the same wod as the table is made.

There are also figure 8 fasteners that are made to attach table tops to frames. From what I have seen of them, they are the cat's meow.
