Guys today I called on this lathe and I am the first in line to take alook at it this weekend. The owner says that its from the early 60's and in full working order but it has been setting about 6yrs.What I'm wondering if this lathe is what the seller says,is this a good lathe or a beginner to have?Is parts available from someplace on earth, what should I pay close attention to while inspecting.Tks Carroll

Carroll,

Go to OWWM and talk about it. They have people into machines as well. There is also a place called Practical Machinist where the members can give you extremely detailed responses.

For small machines like the Atlas better off on home shop machinist forum.

The atlas is ok for what it is. I brought home one of the last model 12" atlas but decided to stick with a 9" south bend till I get something bigger. Look for both a 3 and 4 jaw chuck, steady, tool holders and try to check how much wear near he tailstock. The quick change gearbox is also good to have. Even if you don't thread, the power feeds make for a smoother cut.
