Has anyone tried this:

I'd like to see if this is feasible as a hobby project. Way too much time and fussing to make any money with but could be a good mental exercise.

Not sure what the question is, James: are you thinking of assembling one of these kits, or creating your own from scratch?

I've made these flag pens (and several other laser inlay kits) from both Kallenshaan & Lazerlinez and done just fine with them. Some are more time consuming than others, and I'm not going to retire on the profit :), but I can easily sell them for twice my costs.

Likewise, I'm hoping to develop a few of my own inlay kits, but haven't found the time yet. :(

There's a great video of how Lazerlinez goes through the whole process of making one of their pen hardware kits, and one of the laser inlay kits, and puts it all together. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-Ms9AWbG-0 The wood blank part begins around the 4:00 minute mark.

Must make someone some money, they sell them to Woodcraft.....

Along with about a dozen other ideas that are done the same way.

I'd like to try to make my own inlays for no other reason than just to see if I can do it. There's some profit in the kits I'm sure, but that comes after the development and engineering. You can't make money on 1 but you can at 100. Since I'm a hobbyist, this is more like mental masturbation than for any real need.

Here is a link to show the basics on making an indexer. You may check with the turns forum here at SMC to for other ideas.

Martin,
That looks like a pretty ingenious solution and one that will probably cost me several hours of play time.
Thanx,
Jim
