A good friend surprised me with a really nice chunk of spalted hackberry. Today I mounted it up and went to work.
I went with a wide rim to show the spalting, and I undercut the rim. I kept the lines simple since there was a fair amount of punkyness and it would have been hard to keep any details crisp with the sanding it needed.
It's 11 3/4 x 2 1/2" finished with antique oil and buffed.

Looks great, Kathy. The wood is beautiful and the form is spot on. Punky can be a real pain! I had to deal with it today on some spalted amb maple. You did great on yours

Very nice. I don't usually think of Hackberry as a very good wood to turn but if I could find any wood like this it would be worth it. Good job.

Kathy, this is very nice wood and you did a great job showing it off. The form makes me think of an offering plate at church. I feel like I should put some money in it. I like the undercut and the flat rim. I'm really surprised at the amount of gloss in the finish, given that the wood was so punky. Did you do your finish cuts inside with one of your carbide scrapers?

Good looking bowl Kathy! I like the broad rim as it does a great job on showing off all that spalt! Don't think you could have waited much longer on that chunk of wood - looks about as spalted as it can get!

Gorgeous wood...great job on getting to it before it was dust! Form looks great, one that could be used to place objects in, i.e fruit, but still be able to see the character from the rim.

Doug, I used my round carbide cutter just for the undercut. The rest was all done with my bowl gouge. Before making the finish cuts, I applied a coat of shellac to stiffen the fibers. Sandpaper took care of the rest.
