I cut down a walnut tree earlier this summer and in the process of making bowl blanks I got this thin slice from the outside edge of one of the crotches. I roughed it while it was still freshly green, dna'd it, and it's been drying a couple months. It warped like crazy, folding in on itself like a potato chip. Tonight I decided to try and finish it. I had to take almost 2 inches off the diameter to get down to where it had 3/16" thick of a rim. But the wood that was creamy white when I roughed it turned all shades of gray and made for a pretty wild looking platter. 12" and finished with Howards Feed and Wax.

That's an amazing piece of walnut. The simple design of your platter really lets the wood take center stage. I like the whimsical stand but it seems a bit incongruous with this particular platter which is really quite beautiful.

I didn't take a side view photo, it's just a shallow bowl with a slight serpentine curve, but I have a bottom view...

The stand was turned for a different platter that I entered in a small themed local art show. The whole thing was called "And the dish ran away with the spoon". It's just the only stand I have that will hold a platter.

Anyone else see the old dog face in the grain on the bottom platter pic?

Curt, while I hate to just agree with what everyone has said...yes, this is a very unique piece of walnut and color and you did it very well:). I suspect this piece will draw the comments from folks who can see it up close too, it's quite unique in just being a piece of walnut, and not wildly figured or burled. You definitely got a primo orientation on it. Excellent job!

Awe, c'mon now... I can't be the only one whose head cocked to the side at the "third foot"...

Curt, that is some awsome wood. I have something that warped like you said. It is walnut crotch, too. I wasn't planning on it being really thin, but looks like it may have to be...IF I left enough... Neat how mostly sapwood can be more interesting than all heartwood, huh? Does this one have a destination?

;);) Ya, that "leg" isn't glued in. I've been meaning to do some kind of re-design for it. My wife thinks I need to put some pants on it.

Thanks everyone for all the comments!
