Red Elm Bowl with piercing to create a floral effect. Around 8" (20cm) across. Finished with Bush Oil and polyurethane.

Nice work. Very pleasing design. Pretty color. Was the elm a little hard to pierce?

Thanks everyone

The basic idea for the piece came from antique china that I saw in the mansions of the UK when I was over there in 2004. It has been too long to recall any of the designs exactly, but a common theme was simple geometric designs pierced in the display china. This was before my turning interest developed.

Not particularly hard to pierce. Normally I prefer diffuse porous woods for piercing, but elm is not as strongly ring porous as some woods are, so it takes piercing fairly well.

Looks great! It's a simple but elegant looking bowl. Something you could still use for fruit.
