I have installed the following web pages relating to North Bros."Yankee" ratchet mechanism tools:

http://jp29.org/wwnbyankee.htm .......... North Bros."Yankee" ratchet mechanism tools (overview)
http://jp29.org/wwyankeersd.htm ......... "YANKEE" spiral ratchet screw drivers (general)
http://jp29.org/wwyankee131.htm ......... "YANKEE" 131/131A quick return spiral ratchet screw drivers
http://jp29.org/wwyankee1530.htm ........ "YANKEE" 1530/1530A ratchet hand drills
http://jp29.org/wwyankee1555.htm ........ "YANKEE" 1555 ratchet breast drill
http://jp29.org/wwyankee2100.htm ........ "YANKEE" 2100/2101 Bit Brace

(Actually the links to the other pages can be found on the http://jp29.org/wwnbyankee.htm page)

I would particularly like to determine the time frame when the 1530 ratchet hand drill was suprseded by the 1530A model.

Seems I have one. Made for the Handyman line? 242787242788 $.50 Screwdriver. Marked 133H on the metal barrel. Not too sure about that paint job, though. This one is all "primer gray" Maybe a new paint job in the works for this one, IF I knew what colours to use.

I love North Bros tools. Great designs, very robust. I've got one of each, plus some. I may have some info on other models I can share. I'll check when I get home.

NB made the 1530 from 1912 - 1946. The model was then continued by Stanley. Someone would need to dig deeper, but I suspect once the NB branded drills and or the Yankee Tool Division of Stanley drills sold out, they may have moved to the A designation after that.

Gary, who isn't a tool historian, but who does have two of these wonderful little drills.

Thanks for the input, Gary. What is the source for your information please.

I have several 1530A's stamped .........

"YANKEE"
1530A
NORTH BROS. MFG. CO.
PHILA. PA. U.S.A.

.......... that were manufactured before the acquisition by Stanley in 1946.

Here is one:

I have 1948 (first full fledged post WWII catalog), 1949 and 1950 Stanley #34 Catalogs and 1951, 1953, 1956 and 1958 (prior to closing the North Bros. Plant and moving production to New Brtain) Store catalogs -- all list 1530A ..........

PHILA. PA. U.S.A.

I own later (post 1959) drills marked

STANLEY
YANKEE
1530AX
MADE IN U.S.A.

(changed chuck configuration, etc.)

The 1530/1530A nomenclature gap for me is 1937 (latest dated 1530 Ad I can find) and 1946.

Again, thanks for posting Gary.

This re-written page -- http://jp29.org/wwyankee1530.htm -- may explain the problem more clearly, Gary.
