Got a couple big hunks from Jersey (I have good friends...)
But I don't know what species it is.
The bark was steel gray, and relatively smooth - no ridges.
No leaf sample, tho.
Roughed out a couple bowls... very hard wood.
thanks!

Can't help with identification, but looks like some nice wood!

American Beech, without a doubt. It is hard, smooth steel gray bark, and matches the grain in the second picture perfectly. It is nice to turn, a bit abrasive on your pinky finger in my experience, and spalts very nicely.

**A word of advice, Beech cracks if you look at it funny. Don't let your roughed bowls dry out quickly--I'd seal them and bag them, or turn to final thickness right away. It is a very nice turning wood, in my opinion.
