It's a delta 1" solid spindle for my delta prison shaper. Woo hoo.

That's pretty cool, buuuuuuuuuuut.......

I think I'm happier living on the outside, thanks.

But enjoy.

Actually, the shaper was paroled a while back in an auction. After spending its younger years making improvised weapons, it's going to be coping with life on the outside.

Did it come with one or did you find one? I tried for years to find a 1" solid spindle for my delta, seems they are quite rare now. Either way its good to know they do exist!

I also looked for a long time. My machines came with spindles that were in pretty bad shape. I was able to get this one from a cabinet shop that was reorganizing. Right now, it is installed in the shaper, and with that spindle, my guess is that the machine will be good to go for a long time. I'm pretty happy to keep an old machine going, and working well.

There is a guy in Texas that will rebuild them very reasonably , Richard I think is his name. I got a great 1" interchangeable spindle from him, does nice work. His site seems to be down presently, hope he's still in business.

I've purchased a few spindles from Richard and he has rebuilt three Delta HD spindle cartridges for me over the last few years. Great guy to deal with, and as Peter posted very reasonable. I believe he rebuilds spindle cartridges for the older Powermatic shapers also.

Yea, I know-- the delta hd is not really a heavy duty shaper. That's why I have an scmi t110, which gets closer. The 1" solid spindle cartridge is the dream spindle for the delta hd though.

What is the big spindle out of?

Yeah I hoped I didn't come off too snobby....I just thought the title of the thread invited it:D

That's the spindle out of a 69' Martin as I was replacing the bearings. I had to use a chain fall to remove it from the machine....vs just dropping the Powermatic in my left hand with little trouble;) Didn't Delta make a 1-1/4" spindle? Seems like the 1" would be a compromise no?

Jeff, what is the bore size on the thing? Can you balance your truck tires on that as well?

Peter, the quill is roughly 6" +/- in diameter and length is over 20" from the top bearing to the bottom....makes for a very stable spindle! The spindle itself is only 1-1/8" though for some reason it looks bigger than the Powermatic 1-1/4" in the pic. I haven't tried truck tires as of yet, but I'll tell you I feel much more comfortable running 4" tall corrugated heads on this shaper than I did the Powermatic;)
