Went to see 'the wood guy' today, got some padauk, pao amarillo, bocote, wenge, purple heart, cocobolo and a little maple just to keep it local ;)

Plus a few boards I cut into strips before I thought to take pictures:

Which somehow all came up to over $600! But I did get him to throw in a few bits from the scrap bin for free...

So, after cutting strips of all that colorful wood, what do you do with the sawdust? Easy, give it to the kids and tell them to be creative!

But then, what do you do with all those stips?
242266
Hmmm...they seem to be out of order...
242267That's better!
242268
Only one thing to do now. All glued up and no place to go!

What are you making?!?

Carl, yup, that's a lot of glue. About a half gallon of titebond II, rolled onto one side of each of the 91 pieces of wood in that rack. Better too much than not enough I figure!
Kurt, nothing too exciting really. The whole big rack (15" X 48" X 2") is going to be cut up into little pieces for pen blanks, keychains, box base frames etc.
Here are some more progress pics:

Now the glue is dry:

Next, scrape and send it through the planer, comes out looking just like the pic of before it was glued!
242541

Cut it in half at a 45 degree angle for easier handling...
242542

Then cut it up!
242543

And cut some more, then lay 'em all together just cuz it looks cool.

Ok, done playing, time to cut the strips into short pieces for drilling
242546
All that work just to end up with a few (hundred) tiny little items, and they're not even done yet!

Well, after all that build up, the finished products seem like a let down..lol, but here are a couple examples...

The first pic will be keychains when I get the end pieces. The second is a crochet hook handle that my sister asked me to make. Apparently it makes crocheting easier for people with arthritis.
