A friend of mine that lives in Florida picked up som benches and a table and not sure what kind of wood this is. It has sat out in the weather and does not seem to have any kind or rotting but I am not sure of the species. It looks like maybe redwood or mahogany to me but not really sure. Any ideas would be helpful thanks.

Possibly Mahogany, but it looks a lot like Ipe to me.

Looks like Jatoba to me. How heavy is it?

I vote for Ipe - we built benches for Southern states out of that stuff at my last job....(www.forms-surfaces.com (http://www.forms-surfaces.com))

Cut off a small piece. Place that piece in a bucket of water. If it floats, it's Mahogany, if it sinks its Ipe.

Since it is weather resistant, my guess is teak. I've seen a lot of boat decks that look like that.

Hey Kevin,
Are we helping? or just adding to the confusion?

Well it's tough going by a pic, but judging by the grain I'm going to say pretty sure it's not Ipe, Redwood or Teak. Also highly doubt it's South American Mahogany. What it actually looks like is one of the cheaper African mahoganies used for exterior stair treads and decking.

good luck,

Definitely tropical. Most likely teak.
