Hi all,

Managed to squeeze in a little turning time last weekend, and this is what I came up with. Walnut from the tree feller, pretty dry. Turned to finish, centre hole drilled to depth but no hollowing (no tools small enough!). Sanded to 400 and Finished with CA glue then buffed. Measures 1" at the base, and about 5" tall.

Sorry about the ongoing rubbish pics - I'm working on a better setup :)

Edit: quick question - Is the dark colour of the sapwood an expected colour, or is it a result of too much heat when sanding? I've seen it on a few of my walnut turnings, but not my flat pieces. Thanks

Lee

Nice looking little vase. I would say the darkening of the sap wood may be from the heartwood of the walnut being burnished into the sapwood. I have had that happen when sanding using a heavy hand.

I don't turn enough Walnut to be able to offer any advice on the sanding - but I did want to say that I like the form on this!

I like the shape and finish on that. I'm trying to determine the scale. Are those pine needles?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the kind comments.

Scott, the vase is about 5" tall. They're actually chives :)

Its size doesn't affect how much I like it. Although I may try to copy that at 1/5 scale :)
