This trunk (see pics below) turned into this bowl. It cracked on me (filled with coffee grounds), leapt from the lathe, and would have knocked me a good one on the head if I had not been wearing my faceshield. But, gee, look how pretty the wood is. Any help with identification would be appreciated. Any C & C is also welcome for the bowl.

Sweet Gum (a.k.a Liquidambar)? ...with some seriously cool spalting.

Very nice!

I'd say hackberry.

I would say that it is red maple.

I'd say red maple.... it looks very much like what I have all over my property, including the tiny holes from insect damage. When the red maple is younger and under 12" diameter, the bark tends to be smooth, and then when it ages, the bark gets coarser. It spalts easily as well.

I just picked up a bunch of Sweet Gum and it doesn't look anything like that. I'm going with Red Maple.

I'm thinking Sweet Gum.

Most of the Sweet Gum I have seen has a very coarse bark. No idea other than maybe a maple.

I agree that the bark does not look like sweet gum.

Thanks, folks, I think I'm gonna go with Red Maple, as there is a lot of it around here and not so much Sweetgum
