On a "Walkabout" this afternoon. Stop at a "real" Hardware Store, looking for some 7/16" brass rod. Struck out. Looked at the taps, eh, i have a couple I could modify at home. Walked on down to a "new" Thrift store. $8 for a rusty old saw? Pass, thank you. Walk a little further, into a third Thrift store ( I already have cleaned out #2) and found something rusty staring back at me. "How much?" "$1" "Ok" Came to $1.07 counting tax. This rusty item?241130241131 16" long. 7/8" wide cut. Handle could use a little work241133241134well, maybe I'll just turn a new handle. Worked awhile this afternoon, just getting the "Ironworks" looking a little better..241135241136 Did i say that this is a big Chisel?241137 That is a Stanley #110 sitting beside it. Next up? Turn a handle, find a loop for the end, and learn to sharpen a corner chisel. Sharpening might be the hard part. :D

Why when I go to thrift stores around my area, all I find are broken rice cookers...? Nice find.

How many broken rice cookers does it take to cut a sharp corner in a mortise?
It's Ikea furniture and $500 Raleigh 3-speeds, for me.

Sharpening might be the hard part. :D Yes, it will be hard to sharpen.
Great fine.

Great find indeed!

All I found rust hunting yesterday were a lot of over priced Stanley Planes and a broken chisel for a buck.

The last place we stopped for rust hunting had a Stanley #80 for $15. So I bit. No sales tax in Oregon.

Went and watch a video about sharpening one of these brutes, from a place called Barr? Looks simple enough, I'll give it a go, later. I am trying to schedule shop time on my lathe, to make a new tote. Hoop material??? Maybe an old pipe? Copper even? I can always re-mount on the lathe, and turn the spot for the hoop, when it shows up...

Progress, just a little on the edges of that chisel:241230241231 one edge is looking good, the other.....so-so. Did take it out for a short test drive in some 2x Pine..241232 Did anybody else notice that steel? That is not pitted, more like forge markings. Even the socket has a seam on the inside, like it was hammer welded together. Marbled Steel? Looks good, though...

I'm sure it WAS forged.

The hard part of sharpening those is getting the corner right. It's enough work that corner chisels aren't really worth the effort unless you make mortices all day long. Still, it's a great score though.

Made for the P. S. & W. Co. of Boston, MA. I did get a new handle made today..241297 Used the old handle as a pattern, some old pipe for the hoop. A look at the handle on the lathe241298 Just some scrap I had in the shop. MIGHT be Beech???

Nothing like finding an old tool (cheap too) and bringing it back to life. A nice chisel find even if you never use it. I found an old Warranted Superior 8/26" hand saw for a buck Saturday at a yard sale.
