What a difference 24 hours makes. Last night I started out with a chunk of California Pepper burl.

45 minutes later I had this finished piece, less than 1/4" thick, turned green to finish. Roughly 5" diameter and 5" tall, hollowed through a 1 1/8" hole.

24 hours later here's the same piece is the same orientation. The amount of movement in this wood is amazing, it probably rivals Madrone burl.

Alternate view. As you can probably tell I'm having a ton of fun with this stuff. Next I'm going to try and mold some of it as it dries, see if I can force it into a particular shape, hopefully without it cracking.

that is a LOT of movement. I have had a couple of pieces move after turning to finish, but not even close to that.

Jason, that is an amazing amount of movement. I'd just capitalize on that and let it move until it quits.
Then, you have a piece of "Art" Well done on a beautiful piece of wood.

No sanding on a piece like this unless you do it before it starts to move. You would loose all the detail of the movement. Love it when it does this, and yes, similar to madrone.

I'm the kind of guy that doesn't like it when a piece moves. If I spend time turning and sanding it, and getting the shape just the way I want it, I want it to stay that way! This one would go in the firewood pile and next time I'd rough turn it and let it distort, then remount and make it round again.
