After years of being in envy of Mark Cothren's incredible natural edge walnut bowls I've finally come into a stash of Utah black walnut. It's from a medium/small tree and it has a lot of sapwood. I've been cutting and sealing blanks for a few weeks but decided to turn a piece green to finish. I turned this last weekend and let it sit out in my hot garage all week. It warped quite a bit but didn't crack so I returned the small wedge shaped foot (can't see it in my pics), sanded it and finished it with a shot of danish oil and then deft semi-gloss. It's about 13" across the wide way and about 5" tall. It ain't no Cothren for sure, but it turned out well enough that I want to try a few more.

That one is pretty, Curt.........I like the contrast of the sapwood and heartwood...........great natural coloration, and nicely done form.

That's a beauty Curt! I love the contrast of the creamy sapwood and the dark bark and heartwood and the form looks great too.

Curt - you always underrate yourself! This is a beauty! Love the contrast between woods and am amazed that you managed to keep all that bark in place! Looking forward to seeing more of these!

Nice, really nice. I love some thick craggy bark on a natural edge.

Nice job. I like turning walnut natural edges. I have trouble when sanding of darkening the whiter area for some reason. Doesn't look like you had that trouble.

That's just perfect. Natural edge pieces don't get any better. Congrats.
