Looks like I've worn something out. Won't oscillate anymore. Occasionally catches with a "thump" then stops oscillating again. I'm guessing some cheap plastic part has worn out. Anybody have experience with this? EReplacementParts the place to go?

Mike I have owned one of these sanders for years, and have had no problems with it. Exactly what is it that you need, or want to know? Does the motor still run even when it isn't osillating, or does it shut off or stop running? I have an owners manual and the only thing listed to do when something like this happens, to take the unit to an authorized repair shop. From what you've explained, it seems as if you have a Motor/Drive Asm that isn't working properly. And believe it or not that is the part that you can't fix yourself.

I had a similar problem after approximately 4 years, it was under warranty and the SC repaired it. Can't recall what was the cause, but haven't had any issues with it in the last 8 years.

The motor runs fine, the oscillation is the issue. It runs to top, and stays there. Once in a while, "thump"! And it goes down and back up, then stays there. I'm gonna try taking it to HD tomorrow. Sing it's praises. Hope for the best. I really like this tool. So sad!

If its past the 90 days they will not refund you money, no matter if it is broken
you are better off taking to a authorized ridgid service center.

Well, I can't complain too much. I use it quite regularly. Perhaps too much. I would love to find a similar machine that was heavier duty. HD would not replace it, but I did ship it off for service. Assuming the service charge is low or nothing, I will get it fixed, then sell it. Yup, I bought another one. I can't be weeks without my sander.

Did you try the following (I copied this from another forum):

"The other day, after changing from Spindle to Belt, it failed to "oscillate" (move up/down). http://images.proboards.com/angry.gif:(" title=">:(" border="0"> http://images.proboards.com/sad.gif

After a little searching, I found this to be the solution to my problem:

I removed four screw from the bottom corners using a Phillips Head screwdriver; screw at the power cord, offset next to where you think it is. The bottom came off very easily! http://images.proboards.com/grin.gif

There is a black plastic motor housing on the bottom of the motor; the first thing you see... Four hex nuts, easily removed with a hex nut driver, took the housing off.

Note: the bottom section is molded especially to provide the Cam Path of the oscillation and is very well greased. If not well greased, grease it while you're here.

Upon looking at the clutch pieces, inner with holes around the rim & outer with prongs, the two were NOT meshed together as they should have been.

Pushing the inner one against the spring enabled it to be turned to get them Meshed... Easily done!

I put everything back together... Tested it..."

It worked!
