Here is the 3rd in what I've called my Samurai series. This is made of buckeye burl, courtesy of Tim Rinehart, with an inset African blackwood collar (a design opportunity...) and "finial". It measures 5" x 3 1/2 and is finished with antique oil, Beall buff and Ren wax. I can see why Tim likes this wood so much, it really has striking figure and coloration and was fairly easy to work with. I've also included a pic of all 3 together for comparison. As always, C+C are welcomed and appreciated.

Bob, I really love this series. The "finial" is great and I love the hard line at the major diameter.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Its been fun to try a new style and let it evolve over several pieces. Each one is a learning experience and like most of us, I try to make subtle changes in the hopes of making each one a little better than the last. Although I tend to have woodturning ADD and jump from idea to idea, I do see the value in following through with a theme for at least several pieces.

Bravo! I am glad to see you got such a nice form from that piece of buckeye burl. When it's mostly blond...it's kinda bland, but when it has that greenish/silvery look, it rocks. It really is a sleeper wood, in that the finished pieces always look much better than I expect or even hope.
This piece is no exception to the fine work on the others in the series, and I like seeing them together.
