The other day I was cutting a log (about 10" diameter) into blanks to send to another turner. After I cut the log into 2 halves, I was left with a pith section about 1 1/2" thick. The pith wasn't centered, it was mostly off to one side, so I decided to turn a quick little plate from it.
Turned green, sanded and finished with Mahoneys walnut oil wax finish, it's 9" x 3/4".

The logs keep getting smaller, but with such pretty wood I'll probably end up with a bunch of cups and saucers .

Pretty wood for sure Kathy. I wonder how flat it is going to stay though it looks like it should move evenly at least.

now that is pretty wood..you are going to have to start making lumber out of those smaller logs, and start segmenting! HAAAAA!

That wood is gorgeous! Good job on not letting it go to waste. Nice clean shape really shows off the wood.

Kathy I wouldn't care if it was a cup or saucer if the wood is half that nice. Well done.

Thanks everyone!
I gave the plate to "mrs tree trimmer" today when I picked the trailer up. She really liked it, she likes the darker woods (as do most of us).

The plate should make a hit. The pith slab can have some excellent wood. My tree trimmer acquaintance dropped some 10" and 16" diameter sections of dry cherry yesterday and I need to give something in return and I made a 10" D x 4 H salad bowl out of Bradford Pear. I am still working on him, but having a source of "free wood" is good.
