Just picked up a Stanley 105 miter box in very good condition, especially after I cleaned it up a bit. I've attached a couple of pictures in keeping with the tradition that a find doesn't count otherwise. I also have a question.
One of the pictures shows a screw at the back of the miter box. When I got it, the screw had the remnants of a stack of red fiber washers. The purpose appears to be to provide a stop for the saw blade to keep it from hitting metal on the miter box. If that's the purpose, it hasn't always worked because, as you can see, it looks as if a groove has been worn across the screw that's almost half way through it.
Anyway -- can anyone familiar with these miter boxes confirm that's the purpose of the screw and tell me what it's supposed to hold? My instinct is to put the screw through a small piece of dowel with a hole drilled down the center to serve as a sacrificial piece if the blade hits it. But I may be way off base.
Thanks.
