I have been trying a few platters recently and turned this out of a Yellow Birch Burl slab. It is end grain in orientation and took hours to sand. I used a chatter tool to texture the inside and the very outside but I could not get it to chatter, creating mostly rings instead. When it was dyed it made me think of two comets or other celestial bodies colliding. It is 19" x 18" and finished with multiple coats of Wipe-on-Poly. Comments and critiques are welcome.

Nice work. I found the same issue with sanding yellow birch - it takes a lot of sanding.

I think this is just about the coolest platter I have ever seen.

Thanks everyone for all the kind comments. This piece of wood excited me from the moment I rough turned it and saw all those rays. The dye was primarily Blue but with multiple other colors added to produce the final result. I was glad the dye did not obscure the rays of figure as I think they really make the piece what it is. Thanks again I am really glad you have enjoyed it.

For everything that could have gone wrong and obscure the beauty on the wood, I'm glad you didn't go the safer route to preserve the rays. I really like how this came out.

Awesome.
