Just a few looks. Still need the correct bolts for the handles, except I will have to re-thread the brass nuts as 1/4'x20s. Anyhoo, just a couple looksees at where I'm at on this project..239905239906239907239908Got some "Temp" bolts to hold the handles in place, so maybe a test drive? Say on some beech?239909 or maybe some Pine?239910about two days of work, so far....

I don't know about that iron, or chip breaker yet. Both need to be replaced, way too many pits, and in the wrong spots. Can't quite get the chip breaker to mate all the way across the iron. Both have been neglected far too long. IF I can find the right parts, I'll retire both of them. For now, maybe a Buck brothers iron? Chip breaker??

This project plane is a Stanley/Bailey #4, type 11. WITH a corragated base, no less. That makes it a Bailey #4c, type 11? Iron has the stanley triangle logo. Three patent dates ahead of the tote. Made for a low knob. Original knob was full of splits, the steel part ot the knob's bolt was beyond rusty. Even snapped off in the brass nut. Age of the "Gem", anybody???

Dumb question fer ya......
Why re-tap the screws and nuts?
Highland Woodworking has a rebuild kit for Stanleys.

Digging out the old rusted off bolts, holes got a little bigger. I have the drill rods for the 1/4" x20 threads. Still going to use Brass ends. I HAD to get new Brass nuts anyway, since the old ones were 1) one was missing, and 2) the other was infested with a broken off rust thing that used to be a steel bolt. Barn shelf this plane had sat on must have been outside on the wall. Or, cleaned out of the outhouse's basement....
