That's a accident waiting to happen.

He's gotten better :D his work is now round. His tools have also become far more advanced. The guy might not do things like you are supposed to, but you have to hand it to him for being persistent. Someone needs to show this guy the right way on proper equipment.

Did you see his drive center? It was a counter sink bit! Then he used limp balm for a finish on the handle and the handle he was making was splitting open! Hooollyyyy Cowwww.

You can't fix stupid. We need to get that guy a used mini and a couple of gouges.

Jack, you must not appreciate the distressed look in your tool handles

What made me laugh was the lip balm and using his homemade tool to apply it. :p

:o:o:o I'm a little embarrassed to admit that my first turning attempts were pretty similar. I had a lathe with a spur drive but my first tool was a sharpened screwdriver. And I had no idea how to position the tool rest or hold the tool. But, I didn't post it to youtube!:D:D. Maybe someone should invite him to SMC. It was through this forum and a few others that I learned how to do things better.

My most recent new tool is a modified screwdriver -- turned on edge, the blade eased from the 'bottom' to a point and then thinned from the sides. Best thing I've found so far for cutting small lattices.
