I have been challenged to restore an old rust bucket of a plane. The box arrived this morning...239738:eek: Looks like I'll be busy for a day or two:D I think I have become the Handplanes forlorn hope.....

Man, that thing is as ugly as a hung-over mother in law!

I'll be curious to see the after picture!

Been up to date for awhile. Plane turns out to be a Bailey #4c, with three Pat. dates, "STANLEY" on the (now cleaned and movable) lateral. A low knob was out in front. Frog has a frog adjustment screw, and I finally got all but one bolt free and cleaned up. Frog has that funny looking split at the bottom. 239776 I'm thinking this iron is toast, but I'll try it anyway. Chipbreaker cleaned up a little better, as did the lever cap239777The bolt that I managed to get off the plane, I chucked them into my cordless drill, and spun them into a purple scratch pad. Shined them right up. I'll be back later, with more scary pictures.

not sure if you do the sole lapping but there is a gentleman, Tablesaw Tom who does awesome work on planes with a surface grinder. I had my 4 ground and it works like new. It's amazing.

I usually lap my own. A "teaser" of a Progress report...239789239790Handles are just sitting there for now. Need a "bolt-out" as the old bolts were broken off at the base. Got the frog cleaned up..239791239792and a few of the smaller parts. Lateral lever will move freely. A look at the base...239793239794239795239796 i also got after that pitted old iron and tried to sharpen it up. Had three pits in the way, right at the edge. Well, i suppose i could grind it a bit....

One day's work is in the books, we'll see what tomorrow brings......

For the stuck bolt, you might see if McMaster or Granger still has left hand spiral drill bits.

When I had to drill out screws I noticed that often the heat from the drilling and the drill getting friction on the bolt would often start to drive a bolt through.

I left before being able to get my boss to buy some left hand bits, but it always seemed that they would work better than an easy out.

Just my 239810.
