With SWAT 2012 just around the corner, starting next Friday, I was able to complete my entry for the Beads of Courage project today. It's based on Terry Scott's "Manta Ray" design but with the bowl enlarged into a 6" hollow vessel to hold the beads. I turned it from two blocks of 8" x 8" x 3" Hard Maple glued together.

The surface is textured with a small rotary tool and painted with black Gesso and then dabbed with Antique Copper Folk Art paint. The edges were stained and then touched up with Antique Gold Folk Art paint. The whole piece was sprayed with satin Deft.

My eldest daughter assisted with the "alien" and we attached a surprise to the underside of the lid! :D

This has been my most challenging project ever and I'm quite pleased with the result. Come check it out at SWAT next weekend!

C&C welcome

Kelvin, that's incredible, both in craftsmanship and creativity. Some little kid's face is going to light up when they see it, let alone when they see the passenger inside. Too cool! I love the manta ray shape with the enclosed form. The texturing/dyeing/painting/finishing is top notch as well.
