A couple of weeks ago I aquired a few pieces of Madrone Burl. Tonight after work, I decided I needed to turn one of them. This was turned from a 6 1/2" x 3" bowl blank.
The blanks have all been boiled (before I got them), so I'm hoping it won't move much.
I've been wanting to try some madrone for awhile, and I have to say it lived up to all of my expectations. It was very nice to turn and if my hands were a little bit steadier, sanding would have just been an option.

It's 6" x 2 3/4", finished with Antique oil and I'll give it a buff this weekend.

Kathy,
A very nice HF. The form is pleasing and the finish shows the figure well.

Stunning wood.
Beautiful display of the grain with that shape.
I have never turned Madrone.
I may take a chance one day.

You really did do this piece wonderful justice. The form is soft and shows off the grain, and the finish looks spotless. I think you nailed it very well. I can't think of anything I'd change.
I've only turned madrone one time, but would like to hear how the boiling goes on maintaining shape. I know Reed likes to get the twisted effect on the madrone, but others want to maintain the symmetry, so keep us posted on how that goes.
