I stopped by a local firewood pile yesterday and brought home a couple of pieces. I cut into one of the chunks and upon seeing the contents immediately went back to the pile to get as much as possible. Much of it is too punky to be useful but there should still be quite a bit that's usable.
I'm fairly certain I've identified it as a California Pepper. This piece is a 6" cube showing the best face (apologies for the sub-par cell phone pic). This tree was at least 24" at the base, unfortunately the landscape company that took it out cut the wood so that it's mostly 6-8" thick in the end grain direction, that means most of it will end up being medium sized hollow forms, the pieces aren't thick enough for any decent sized bowls except in the end grain direction.
